Waterborne Diseases: Impact of Heavy Rains on Healthcare in the UAE
Hospitals and medical facilities in the UAE are currently experiencing a surge in waterborne diseases as a consequence of the region’s recent heavy rainfall, which has resulted in flooding in certain areas. A variety of illnesses such as typhoid, dengue fever, respiratory infections, and skin conditions have become more prevalent due to prolonged exposure to water and damp environments.
Increased Cases of Waterborne Diseases
A notable 20% rise in patients exhibiting symptoms like fever, cold, and cough have been observed recently. Children are particularly susceptible to these illnesses due to their increased vulnerability to respiratory conditions and weaker immune systems. Medical facilities like Aster Clinics in Dubai and Sharjah have reported a similar uptick in cases, with common rain-related ailments including flu-like illnesses, viral fever, gastrointestinal infections, and skin conditions.
At NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Ain, the daily number of patients visiting general physicians has increased to 40, up from the usual range of 25 to 30. Dr. Mujeeb Quadeer, a general practitioner at the hospital, notes a significant rise in cases of viral fever, colds, and coughs, with prevalent rain-related illnesses encompassing acute bronchitis, rhinosinusitis, rhinitis, acute pharyngitis, and nasopharyngitis.
- Concerns of Mosquito-Borne Illnesses
Stagnant water resulting from the heavy rains has created ideal breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes, raising concerns about mosquito-borne illnesses. Dr. Sayed, group medical director of Aster and Access Clinics in the UAE, anticipates a surge in such illnesses and skin conditions in the days ahead. Preventive measures such as using mosquito repellents, installing bed nets, and avoiding waterlogged areas are emphasized to mitigate risks.
Dr. Doaa Zaki, a general practitioner at Medcare Medical Center in Mirdif City Centre, highlights the importance of eradicating mosquitoes indoors to prevent bites that could lead to skin infections. Prompt treatment with anti-allergic creams or gels and cold compresses is recommended to alleviate discomfort and expedite healing.
- Healthcare Recommendations in Response to Waterborne Diseases
As the influx of respiratory infections rises due to the heavy rains, medical professionals advise the public to focus on home remedies and over-the-counter medications for symptomatic relief, reserving hospital visits for severe health concerns. Dr. Eman Abdul Kader, a specialist in internal medicine at Burjeel Speciality Hospital in Sharjah, suggests staying hydrated, consuming fresh fruits and vegetables, and trying home remedies like gargling with warm salt water and drinking ginger tea with lemon and honey to alleviate mild symptoms.
In the midst of these healthcare challenges brought on by the inclement weather, cooperation among individuals, healthcare providers, and authorities is crucial. By working together to implement proactive measures, raise awareness, and offer support to those in need, communities can navigate through these difficult times with resilience and determination.
